London models

London Model

The question that has bothered me past months is, Does photography shows us reality as it is?. My conclusion is no, it does not show the world as it is. A photo is an interpretation, based on reality. To articulate this idea i took photos of daily life on the streets of London and in the process i reduced the focus range so the subjects on the images look like models. Model is a set of simplified objects that can be used to visually help us understand the context of things. When making one, you have the power to change color of cars, houses, clothes and you decide where everything is. Cars turn into toys, the street into a playground and people into statues. The image is a representation of reality. This is your world! Which is your interpretation of reality as you know it. Photography has the same, even more power. It can change colors, shape, position, size and with modern digital technology there is nothing you can’t change. By making a image or a interpretation of real surroundings into a image of a model which is based on the original surroundings is is a way to articulate this idea, that photography is an interpretation not a truly valid documentation of reality.

Arnar – this is great work.

I was wondering whether you further manipulated the images digitally after taking them or whether the whole effect is optical – the reduction of the focal range? It’s an astonishing effect – and relates I guess to the ‘hyperreal’ – Baudrillard’s (and others) notion of the conflation of the real and the simulation.

It’s a great twist on what is becoming commonplace, to have simulations of yet-to-be-built buildings that are made as photographic as possible – I saw one recently in Stratford that had within it a man taking a photo…
